Standing Rules

Women teachers of Sigma Chapter, Alpha Epsilon State (Indiana), welcome you!  Our chapter members include all phases of education, from kindergarten and pre-school teachers, junior high and high school teachers, school nurses and administrators, to college professors.

Located in western Lake County, Indiana, Sigma Chapter currently has 68 active members and six reserve members. Chartered in 1944 and a member of Council 1, we strive to follow the purposes of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International as well as to offer fellowship to our sisters. As women educators, we are proud to be a part of the largest international organization of its kind. During 2011 our chapter will give a grant-in-aid of $1,000 to a future woman teacher.

Sigma Chapter is proud to be the home chapter of two state officers: Carolyn Borchardt, Alpha Epsilon State corresponding secretary; and Shirley Hewlett, Alpha Epsilon State recording secretary and state webmaster. Celia Leahu also serves on a state committee. Sigma Chapter was named a Golden Key Chapter at the April 2009 Convention, and the chapter newsletter, The Rose, has been consistently named a 5-Star newsletter by Alpha Epsilon State.

Sigma Chapter adheres to the Purposes of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, which are:
      To unite women educators of the world in a genuine spiritual fellowship;

To honor women who have given or who evidence a potential for distinctive service in any field of education;
      To advance the professional interest and position of women in education;
      To encourage the individual members of the Society to support desirable educational legislation and initiate legislation in the interests of women educators;

To endow scholarships to aid outstanding women educators in pursuing graduate study and to grant fellowships to non-member women educators.
      To stimulate the personal and professional growth of members and to encourage their participation in appreciation in appropriate programs of action;
