What He Does

Sprinkler fitter are pipefitting specialist in fire protection.  They install, repair, and maintain all types of fixed extinguishing systems.  While most of this work deals directly with automatic sprinkler systems, they also have the skills necessary to install and service a wide variety of other fire protection equipment such as standpipes, carbon dioxide systems, halon systems, foam systems and dry chemical systems.

Working Conditions
This job requires a person with the ability to carry heavy pieces of pipe of various lengths, to climb and work at various heights and to have the manual dexterity to handle the tools of the trade. It is hard work that requires dedicated, intelligent and reliable people who must often travel to different job sites over a seven county area in the performance of their trade.

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS

      1.   Age - Must be 17 years of age or older (Copy of birth certificate required)

      2.   Education – High school graduate or equivalent (GED) (Must provide an official transcript and/or

             GED certificate and scores must be provided)

      3.   Good physical condition – must be able to perform work of the trade and pass physical examination upon entry into the program.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOINT APPRENTICESHIP COMMITTEE

      1.  Applicants must successfully pass a drug test as condition of employment.

2.   Applicants must provide a non-refundable application fee of $25.00 by certified check or  

      money order, made payable to Local #281, JAC – NO PERSONAL CHECKS WILL BE  

      ACCEPTED!

3.   Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation       

4.   Please provide most recent DD-214 form, if applicable.

TERMS OF APPRENTICESHIP TRAINING

      1.   You are under the jurisdiction and control of Local #281 Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee

             and assigned to a contractor for 5 Years.

      2.   You attend school one day every other week for 5 years, the remaining time is spent on the job training.

PERFORMANCE REVIEWS

1.       You must perform satisfactorily both on the job and in related training.  Unsatisfactory progress in either area can result in termination of your apprenticeship.

2.       You are required to work both indoors and outdoors. 

3.       On successful completion of your probation you will be recommended for membership in Local #281.

APPLICATION PERIOD

      1.   Notice will be given in local newspaper thirty (30) days prior to their availability.
