Lee Quency Calhoun
 |
Born February 23, 1933 in Laurel Mississippi. |
 |
Moved to Gary, Indiana when he was nine years old. |
 |
Died June 21, 1989 in Erie, Pennsylvania. |

Mr. Calhoun graduated
from Roosevelt High School where he was
persuaded to become a high jumper. He received a Track and Field
Scholarship to North Carolina Central University. He spent 2
years at the university and was drafted into the Army and returned to
North Carolina Central University in 1955 where he
set world bests in the 60-yard, 70-yard and 80-yard hurdles and
eventually set records in the 45-yard, 50-yard, 60-yard and 70-yard
hurdles. Mr. Calhoun
became the first Olympian to win successive victories in the 110-meter
hurdles. In 1960 he set a
world record of 13.2 seconds in a pre-Olympic meet in Bern, Switzerland. After graduating, he coached
for several colleges including Grambling, Yale, and Western Illinois University.
