Lee Quency Calhoun

Born February 23, 1933 in Laurel Mississippi.  
Moved to Gary, Indiana when he was nine years old. 
Died June 21, 1989 in Erie, Pennsylvania.

Mr. Calhoun graduated from Roosevelt High School where he was persuaded to become a high jumper. He received a Track and Field Scholarship to North Carolina Central University. He spent 2 years at the university and was drafted into the Army and returned to North Carolina Central University in 1955 where he set world bests in the 60-yard, 70-yard and 80-yard hurdles and eventually set records in the 45-yard, 50-yard, 60-yard and 70-yard hurdles. Mr. Calhoun became the first Olympian to win successive victories in the 110-meter hurdles. In 1960 he set a world record of 13.2 seconds in a pre-Olympic meet in Bern, Switzerland. After graduating, he coached for several colleges including Grambling, Yale, and Western Illinois University.
