Betty Robinson Schwartz

Born August 23, 1911 in Riverdale Illinois.
Died May 18, 1999 at the age of 87.
Betty Robinson of Riverdale, running the 100-meter and the 400-meter relay, won two golds in the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics, the first woman to ever win a gold in track, and another gold in the 400-meter relay at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Mrs. Schwartz began her track and field career at Thornton High School in Harvey. Her biology teacher at the time was on a commuter train when he saw her running to catch the train. Astounded at the girl's speed, he suggested that they start training together.
