Our Local History | Our Locations Our Local HistoryLutheran Social Services of Indiana (LSSI) provides social services to residents of 22 counties across northern Indiana. Services are provided to all individuals regardless of religious affiliation. The agency is a body of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America and the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. The agency is affiliated with Lake Area United Way in the northwest region and with United Way of Allen County in the northeast region. Our agency is a licensed child placement agency by the State of Indiana and is also accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Services for Families and Children. For many years the Reverend Philip Wambsganss, pastor of Emmaus Lutheran Church, had experienced firsthand the challenge of providing adoption and family foster care services for placing homeless children into the families of the Lutheran community. Families in the Emmaus congregation had been taking in displaced or destitute children brought to the church. In 1901, Rev. Wambsganss began Lutheran Social Services. Over the past 100 years, by God's blessing, the ministry has grown and programs have been added as community needs have changed. Today, with the support of volunteers, donors and a dedicated staff, Lutheran Social Services helps care for and serve people through the love of Jesus Christ, without regard to income or ability. Central administration is located in our Fort Wayne Office. Local services are provided through several church locations in various counties of Northwest Indiana. The agency is governed by an 18 member Board of Directors who meet quarterly. LSSI is supported by approximately 200 Lutheran Church congregations across northern Indiana. The Northwest Office in Griffith has been in operation for 24 years, serving a seven county area. The Northwest core program services are: Services
