In 1979, the last of Griffith's four depots, a Grand Trunk Railroad combination depot in 1911, was scheduled for demolition.
A local resident and "old railroader" Ray Anderson spearheaded a drive to save the Depot as a tribute to Griffith's railroading past. Through the efforts of Town Council Member Merle Colby, the Grand Trunk agreed to sell the building to the town for $50, provided it was moved off railroad property.
A group of citizens and community organizations, among them, the Griffith Junior Women's Club and Community Spirit Organization, coordinated a drive to raise funds to move the Depot. Thanks to donations from town organizations, businesses, school children and private citizens, the Depot was moved across Broad Street to its present site in January, 1980.
The building was renovated through the volunteer efforts of Griffith citizens, businesses, schoolchildren, and organizations. Even people from surrounding towns came out and helped. In October, 1980, the building was officially dedicated as a museum, a tribute to Griffith's railroading past.
