Join members of the Calumet Astronomical Society at the Thomas Conway Observatory to witness the transit of Venus. On June 5, the planet Venus will pass directly between the Earth and the sun. See the distant planet as a small dot gliding slowly across the face of the sun. Transits of Venus are rare, coming in pairs that are eight years apart but separated by over a century. After the June 2012 transit of Venus, the next such alignment occurs in the year 2117. The transit will begin at 5:09 p.m. and last until 11:50 p.m. Because the sun will set at 8:20 p.m., live streaming from a remote site will be televised on a big screen monitor in the classroom of the observatory to provide a view of the transit after the sunset. Viewing the sun without proper eye protection is very dangerous. Members of CAS will have their telescopes and binoculars fitted with special solar filters to allow safe viewing of the transit. Do not look directly at the sun without the proper solar filters to provide eye protection.
