Celebrate Earth Day by learning something new and exciting! Guest Speaker Alan Barbick of Ancient Art Reproductions Ages 10+ Fee: $2.00 Sponsored by Gibson Woods Wild Ones
At a time when many artists are using technology to push the boundaries of their talents, one artist has turned to the past for inspiration. Alan Barbick carves stone reliefs based on images left by ancient people throughout North America. As a geology student in South Dakota, he discovered ancient rock art while looking for rock specimens. Since that time, he has traveled to many sites, looking for images that ancient cultures have carved or painted on rocks. He creates replicas of the images by carving on slate or other types of stone. His first piece was a carving of Kokopelli, a Native American mythological figure. Since then, he has carved more than 3,000 pieces. The carvings represent many different Native American cultures, some thousands of years old. Join us at the Gibson Woods to meet Alan and learn more about ancient petroglyphs (carvings) and pictographs (paintings). Hear him tell his story of how he became interested in this art form and what inspired him to pursue the art of replicating it. |
